Living In The Present Moment - For Happiness And Relief From Stress

Living in the present moment is an essential habit for people who are happy and carefree. And don't forget that carefree is also stress free.

Living in the Past

Many people are stuck in the past. They continually lament everything that is wrong in their lives and feel unable to change it. They blame their parents, or a teacher, or a bully at school for all the bad feelings that they carry around with them. And they carry these feelings into all their present relationships. They have adopted the role of the victim and in so doing, have given away their personal power to others. They are stuck in a self-imposed prison, unable to forgive and unable to let go.

It is not always easy to let go of the past, but remember that the present is the only moment we have now. The thoughts that go on in our minds result from the beliefs that we have picked up along the way and decided to adopt. However difficult it is, we must learn to take responsibility for what is going on in our minds. For some people it is just a matter of realising this. For others, therapy or counselling might help or finding a self-help group. Don't be a victim of your past. Instead of bearing grudges against other people, try to forgive them, however badly you feel they treated you. Remember that we are all doing the best that we can with the experience that we have, at any one time and many of us are quite unskilful in our actions. Don't hang on to the past. Decide who you want to be now and what you can do to make your dreams come true.

Living in the Future

For other people, they live only for the future. They can't be happy now because they don't have that great job, that fulfilling relationship or that new car. Or they can't go on holiday, don't have enough money or self-esteem or they feel too fat or self-conscious. These people put off feeling happy until they get whatever it is that they are looking forward to. They may strive for what they want but when they get it, often they quickly move on to wanting the next thing that will make them happy. Or they may stay stuck because they don't feel able to be or do that thing that they think will make them feel good. You give away your power when you wait for somebody or something outside of yourself to make you happy. Claim your fulfilment now. Again, my advice is to decide what you want to be now and go for it.

Living in the NOW

You will only be happy and fulfilled when you let go of the past and the future. When you don't feel you have the power to change things, you feel helpless. You do have the power to change your life even if you don't know it yet. Try bringing yourself into the present moment. What do you really need right at this exact moment? The chances are you are OK right now.

Look around you and see the wonder of life. How delicate and intricate it is. How strong and determined. How colourful and alive. Take time to stop and look around you. See the beauty of the world we live in. Wonder and marvel at what is all around us. Live in the present moment and enjoy it as best you can.

Life is short and soon over. Don't waste it hanging onto the past or hankering after the future. Always live fully in each moment - give your best attention now and make every minute meaningful and fulfilling. Be grateful for what you do have instead of lamenting what you don't.

When you live in the present moment, you are not cluttering your mind with past disappointments and future needs and desires. You give your full attention to whatever you are doing now. You enjoy living and make the most of life. Your mind becomes freer and more carefree and your stress levels reduce. So, be sure to keep bringing your mind back to what you are doing or being now.

Happiness IS a state of mind. Accept and be happy with what you've got now. Then make plans to change the things that you don't like, one step at a time. Be fully present in the planning process. Be fully present in everything you do. That is living! That is freedom! That is a cure for stress.
